Someone Finds Refuge
Contemplative Awakening in a Mountain Cave
A favorite author of mine on the topics of food, self, and consciousness is Michael Pollan. I look forward to reading his next book that arrives next month. It’s entitled “The World Appears - A Journey Into Consciousness.”
He has graciously provided an excerpt of the book, a gift article in The Atlantic, called “How to Have a Don’t Know Mind.” It tells of his encounter with a Zen abbess, Roshi Joan Halifax and how his stay in a cave in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico, with it’s silence and solitude awakened his contemplative awareness and understanding.

Thanks for mentioning Michael Pollan.
My son, a foodie and a chef, referred me to him years ago.
One of my early takeaways from reading some of his work was that we are taking in a lot of " foodlike substances" that are not REAL food.
Also, " IF your grandmother wouldn't recognize it as FOOD, it probably isn't".
I'll look for his article in the Atlantic.
Thanks,
Frank Pendola
